About Us

MAMAM started with homesickness.

I grew up in Indonesia and spent 15 years in Singapore, surrounded by the bold, spicy, aromatic flavors of Southeast Asia. Sambal was always part of the table and, for me, part of what made food feel like home.

Then COVID lockdown happened in 2020.

Living in Singapore, I couldn’t travel back to Indonesia to see my family. I missed home-cooked food, especially my mom’s sambal. With nowhere to go, I turned to my kitchen. What started as boredom and curiosity became a way to recreate the flavors I was missing.

I experimented with traditional Indonesian sambal flavors, batch after batch, until I created something that reminded me of home.

But today, I live in California. So MAMAM is my take on sambal: rooted in Indonesian tradition, made with fresh ingredients available here in the U.S., and shaped by my life in California.

Why MAMAM?

The name is a little piece of my childhood.

Makan means “to eat” in Indonesian and Malay. MAMAM is inspired by the playful baby-talk version of the word, the kind of simple word parents use when encouraging little ones to eat.

And hidden inside MAMAM is “mama” — what I call my mom.

So MAMAM is more than a name. It’s my little homage to her, to her cooking, and to the flavors I grew up with.

Sambal, the MAMAM way.

Our sambals are inspired by the bold flavors of Indonesia and Southeast Asia, but made for everyday eating.

From our savory and garlicky Sambal Chili, to the fresh and mild Sambal Hijau, to our bright and spicy Sambal Lemongrass inspired by Bali’s Sambal Matah, each jar is made to bring more flavor to the foods you already love.

Put it on rice. Mix it into noodles. Spoon it over eggs. Dip your fried chicken. Add it to your BBQ.

However you eat it, we hope MAMAM brings a little more excitement to your table — and maybe, for a moment, makes you feel at home.

From my mom’s kitchen, with a little California twist, to yours.

Welcome to MAMAM.
